Government Refuses To Meet With UNFC in Japan

The government has refused to hold a peace meeting with the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) in Japan. The UNFC wanted the Japanese Nippon Foundation to be the mediator during upcoming discussions after the organization donated $3 million in aid to ethnic areas in Myanmar.

Burma army reinforcement raises fears in Hpakant

Despite a recent lull in hostilities between Burmese government forces and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) around strategic Hpakant Township, the Burmese army has increased its presence in the jade mining area, spreading fear among locals that a resumption of the conflict is imminent.

Clashes Breakout In Kachin State Following Recent Meeting With Govt

There has been over 40 clashes between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Myanmar army   since governmental representatives and Kachin resistance leaders met to discuss peace options in the Chinese city Shwe Li, on Oct.30. Many of the battles took place in the KIA’s Brigade 4 area in Northern Shan State and near their Laiza headquarters.

Majority should look through the minority’s eyes: Suu Kyi

Speaking to an audience of 8,00 Burmese, including many refugees, at Oxford Senior Secondary School in Delhi on Friday, Burmese pro-democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi said that sometimes the majority has to look at things through a minority’s eyes “When I came to India, I felt that I was coming to a friendly country with a long tradition,’ she said. “All the [Burmese] people living in India are like our family members: brothers, nephews, nieces and children. So I want you to look on [them] as family members. I want to say solemnly that our country is a ‘union.’ ”
